Frequently Asked Questions
Words are counted as sequences of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or newlines. Hyphenated words (like "self-aware") count as one word. Numbers and symbols that are separated by spaces count as separate words.
Reading time is calculated based on an average reading speed of 200 words per minute. This is a standard estimate for silent reading of normal text. Actual reading speed varies by individual and text complexity.
Paragraphs are counted as blocks of text separated by one or more empty lines. A single line break without an empty line between them doesn't create a new paragraph.
The tool provides both counts. You'll see "Characters (with spaces)" which includes all characters, and "Characters (without spaces)" which excludes whitespace. Both counts are useful for different purposes like social media limits or translation pricing.
